My take on Avatar

Sun Dec 20, 2009, 12:49 AM
  • Mood: Christmas Spirited
  • Listening to: Christmas songs as sung by Il Divo
  • Reading: The Sookie Stackhouse Series
  • Watching: Yu Yu Hakusho
  • Playing: God of War
  • Eating: stuff
  • Drinking: water?
Let me make it clear that I adore this movie. I love it. This is a beautiful movie and as a person who actively looks for points where CG doesn't mesh, I honestly didn't feel that I was watching a CG film. When the credits started to roll, I was exhausted. It was like experiencing a three-hour emotional roller-coaster of awesome.

So, any good thing that has been said for this movie, I pretty much agree with. But that's not the point of this journal. My point in writing this blurb is in reply to the main point of negative criticism that this movie has received. The cliche storyline.

Now to be fair, I do see and understand where this comes from. The story is of a cliche 'Humans/Military are evil and Trees are good' mold, but really how much does this fact matter in the overall quality of the film? On its own, without comparing it to other movies with similar themes, does this film stand as an entertaining and possibly emotionally moving film experience? My answer would be a definitive yes... well, actually its more of a "Hell Yeah!" Why is it that nowadays it is expected that the story must be something groundbreaking?

That aside, is a cliche story really the horribly negative thing that all these critics are making it seem to be? Think back on one of the most famous movies ever created. Star Wars. Now you watch that first film, look me dead in the eye and honestly tell me that it isn't a recycled cliche story with archtypical characters. Star Wars is a classic underdog/hero's journey story about the battle of good versus evil. We've all seen this story a hundred times. Now ask yourself, does that make it a bad movie? No. Star Wars is fuckin' awesome and also like Avatar, Star Wars was a technically/visually innovative movie at the time it was released... I not really sure what point I'm trying to make with this...

I'm not a professional movie critic or reviewer, I watch movies to be entertained and base my opinion of a film pretty much solely on that aspect. I was thoroughly entertained by this movie and thus, in my opinion, it served the purpose that every movie is suppose to serve.

I'm gonna get off my little soapbox now and get my stupid ass to sleep. If anybody wants to debate me on this or talk about the movie, feel free to comment ^^
